INTRODUCTION:-
Wire-cut EDM uses a slender wire as an electrode and is extremely useful for making narrow slots and detailed internal features in the work piece and for detailed tool and die making.Wire-cut EDM is similar in some ways to band sawing in conventional machining, where the saw teeth do the cutting. In wire-cut EDM a spark occurs between the wire electrode and the workpiece and metal removal is effected.
The wire-feed is continuous during the process and the wire may not be reused. Different metals are used for wire electrodes; brass is one popular material. EDM wire can be of very small diameter, in the order of 0.125mm,0.20mm,0.30 mm. 0.30 mm is most commanly using wire. Sapphire guides maintain the alignment of the wire as it passes through the work. Wire tension is maintained by weighted pulleys or other mechanical tension methods.
