GREY CAST IRON
Introduction:-
Melting together low quantity foundry pig, scrapped casting and coke in a cupola, which is similar to a small blast furnace produces it. The salvaged cast scrap is used to control the alloying elements in the finished cast iron. When this cast iron is fractured it gives a grey appearance therefore it is called grey cast iron. It has most of the carbon in graphite form.
Properties:
1. It has high compressive strength but low tensile strength.
2. It has self –damping property does not vibrate or ring.
3. It has self lubricate property and also good anti-friction property.
4. It has high fluidity and ability to make sound castings.
5. It prevents chatters when used for machine frames.
6. It has good wear resistance.
Uses:
1. Machine tool structures (bed, frame)
2. Frames for electric motors.
3. Piston rings, engine cylinders blocks, cylinder blocks, brake drums, clutch plates
4. Rolling mill and general machinery parts.
5. House holds appliances.
6. Underground pipes for water.
7. Pumps, car wheels, transmission cases.
8. Surface plates, vice body, jack body.
